What is a stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to an area of the brain is cut off. This deprives brain cells of oxygen, which causes them to die. As this happens, the area of the body controlled by those cells loses its ability to function. According to Stroke.org, more than 800,000 individuals experience strokes each year, which calculates to about one stroke every 40 seconds.
There are generally two types of stroke:

  • Hemorrhagic stroke. These are more rare than the other type. They occur when a brain aneurysm bursts or a weakened blood vessel begins to bleed. Though they only account for about 15% of all strokes, they are responsible for about 40% of all stroke-related deaths.
  • Ischemic stroke. These occur when a blood clot blocks a blood vessel from carrying blood to the brain. Most strokes are classified as ischemic.
