Erb’s Palsy Victims Can Count On Our Attorneys

Complications during labor and delivery could mean a lifetime of painful medical consequences for those afflicted. In particular, Erb’s palsy is a severe nerve injury that can occur during the birthing process. In many cases, appropriate medical action during delivery can prevent permanent Erb’s palsy. Tragically, if appropriate obstetrical care does not occur, the child could endure serious medical difficulties for years to come.

What Is Erb’s Palsy?

Erb’s palsy is another name for brachial plexus palsy. The brachial plexus is a network of spinal nerves in the neck, shoulder, and down the arms. These nerves provide movement and feeling to the shoulder, arm, hand, and fingers. Palsy means weakness, and brachial plexus birth palsy causes shoulder, arm, and hand weakness and loss of motion.

Erb’s palsy can occur when the baby’s shoulder becomes stuck behind the mother’s pelvic bone during delivery and the obstetrician pulls too hard on the baby’s head, causing an injury to the brachial plexus nerves. One or two of every 1,000 babies have this condition.

With exercise, physical therapy and regular care, many babies will recover movement and feeling in their arms. Some children may require nerve grafting and/or tendon transfer surgery, however, with very serious brachial plexus injuries may never recover full control and full feeling.
