Potentially more than 177 students have been sexually abused by Dr. Richard Strauss, an Ohio State team doctor. Dr. Strauss molested male athletes for two decades. Coaches, athletic administrators and other team physicians were allegedly complicit in the abuse. Students openly discussed the physician’s examination methods and were fully aware of his presence lingering in the locker rooms, showers and saunas.

Independent investigators reported that Strauss sexually abused at least 177 male students, maybe more. Complaints regarding Strauss fell on deaf ears for years. It wasn’t until a wrestler recently came forward and said that he was victimized that an independent investigation was launched. Ohio State has received reports that Strauss abused athletes in 14 sports.

“By now everyone should understand that it is no coincidence that the same professionals continue to be found to have molested unsuspecting victims. These professionals all hold positions of authority and trust. Specifically, I am referring to physicians, teachers, coaches, clergy, etc.” states attorney Schochor, Staton, Goldberg, and Cardea, P.A..

Increasing in Numbers

Today it is not just the actual physical touching that is occurring, but an increased number of videotaping of unclothed victims. Are these direct and indirect sexual assaults increasing in number or are we just at a point where victims are more willing to come forward?

Regardless, the frequency with which sexual abuse is occurring in this country cannot be ignored. Supervising and monitoring people who are in the best position to commit such crimes is a priority. And holding predators criminally and civilly liable is essential, along with the individuals who are complicit.
